‘Schilderen gaat natuurlijk nooit emotieloos, maar het is pertinent niet zo dat ik een emotie oproep om die te gaan schilderen. Er is een doek en daar moet een beeld op, en dat beeld met zijn vorm en kleur, daar gaat het om. Dat beeld zit in mijn hoofd, daar begin ik mee en het kan totaal anders worden, maar het gaat om het beeld’.

‘Of course, painting does not take place in an emotional vacuum, but it is pertinently not the case that I evoke an emotion in order to begin a painting. There is a canvas, and a painting has to be placed on it, and it’s all about that picture with its form and colour. That picture is in my head, I begin with that and it may turn out completely differently, but it’s still all about the picture’.
